In the earliest period of its emergence, the university performed a single role: preparing trained, qualified cadres able to carry out their part in society. Over time, further roles emerged, namely scientific research and community service. Community service now draws considerable attention from universities, because current developments require the university to open onto its external surroundings by meeting their needs and resolving their various problems. This article sets out the principal constraints affecting the Algerian university, concentrating on the problems that stand between the university and its function in the service of society, and it advances a proposed vision for consolidating the relationship between the university and society.
