Abstract

This research critically analyses the interactive relationship between the local marine fisheries economy based on economic coupling mechanisms and regional economic resilience. The findings with the research are based on two Chinese coastal provinces, including Shandong and Guangdong. The findings of this study indicate that the local governments of Shandong and Guangdong provinces have made significant advancements in the development of their marine fisheries sector. However, based on key economic indicators such as aquatic production, employment, and GDP contribution, Guangdong has demonstrated superior performance compared to Shandong. While factors such as innovation, sustainability initiatives, government support, and governance effectiveness have contributed to this success, the primary driver behind Guangdong's outperformance is its strategic diversification of the fisheries sector. Additionally, the study highlights the strong interconnections between the marine fisheries industry and other key sectors, including tourism, transportation, and seafood production. These linkages have not only benefitted from the expansion of marine fisheries but have also created further opportunities for growth in the sector. In this context, Guangdong has excelled, largely due to its commitment to diversified and sustainable development strategies implemented in recent years. Furthermore, the research underscores the role of the blue economy initiative in enhancing regional economic resilience, as it has facilitated economic diversification and technological innovation, positioning Guangdong as a leader in the sustainable development of marine fisheries.
